THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A MEDITERRANEAN NETWORK OF UNESCO CHAIRS – MUNCH

The Mediterranean UNESCO Chairs Network, MUNCH, has been established in 2016 as a voluntary joint initiative of 14 Chairs of the Mediterranean region belonging to the areas of Culture, Science and Social Sciences.

MUNCH has three main aims:

– to optimize the use of intellectual resources of the Mediterranean UNESCO chairs in different disciplines, by promoting joint research projects on relevant issues of the area;

– to promote the exchange of ideas, experiences, and cultural models between Mediterranean countries of Southern Europe, Middle East and Northern Africa;

– to deal with complex and often dramatic issues presently faced by the Mediterranean region and which ask for prompt answers: e.g. migrations and the related problems of inclusion exclusion; the relationships between different cultures in times of conflict; how the shared tangible and intangible heritage is protected by composite and fragmented communities.

MUNCH’s activity refers to the principles of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the UN New Urban Agenda, and the UNESCO Global Report on Culture.

The network was formally established in June 2016 in a meeting promoted by the University of Ferrara. A second general meeting was held in Siena in January 2017 when the international workshop “Walled Cities, Open Societies. Managing Historic Walls in Urban World Heritage Properties” organized by the City of Siena and the UNESCO Regional Bureau for Science and Culture in Europe – Venice took place.

The next meeting will be in Paris in October 2017.

MUNCH in cooperation with the UNESCO Bureau in Venice is promoting the development of an observatory to monitor the processes of implementation of the UNESCO principles by GALTirrenico. The results of this observation will be diffused through the web as a contribution to the UNESCO Urban Network on Culture project.

Another project under development deals with the problems posed by the inclusion of migrants in intermediate and small centres of the Mediterranean region.

MUNCH is pro-tempore coordinated by the UNESCO Chair of the University of Ferrara.
